David Charles Horn Foundation

OVERVIEW: The David Charles Horn Foundation supports unpublished works of playwrights around the world.

IP TAKE: This transparent funder awards an annual prize to playwrights rather than traditional grants. It typically receives thousands of submissions from playwrights each year, so applicants can expect plenty of competition.

This is an approachable and supportive funder, but it is highly focused on its areas of giving, so grantseekers looking for funding that’s adjacent to, but not entirely focused on this grantmaker’s scope of work will not have much luck here.

PROFILE: Francine Horn established the David Charles Horn Foundation in 2003 in honor of her husband, David, who is described as a “man of vision and discipline with an overriding dedication to the written word.” The foundation seeks to “invigorate contemporary theater by discovering and celebrating compelling new voices in playwriting through its founding and support of the Yale Drama Series Prize.” It “supports emerging playwrights,” who are “perhaps in greater need of assistance today than beginning writers in any other of the literary arts. The foundation is the sole funder for the Yale Drama Series.

Grants for Theater and Writing

The David Charles Horn Foundation seeks submissions for its annual playwriting competition each year, the David Charles Horn Award. Submissions must be original, unpublished full-length plays written in English and translations, musicals, adaptations and children’s plays are not accepted by the foundation. The winner of the award receives $10,000, publication of his or her manuscript by Yale University Press and a staged reading at a prestigious venue. Applicants can see past winners and their published plays further down the page here.

Important Grant Details:

The deadline for submissions is subject to change but the foundation typically accepts submissions between June 1 and August 15. It receives around two thousand submissions per year, which is then narrowed to 50 for the judge to review. For contact information and complete competition guidelines, see here.
