PROFILE: The Hanley Family Foundation was established in 1986 in Atlanta, Georgia by John W. Hanley, Sr., a former CEO of the Monsanto Corporation, and his wife, Mary Jane. The foundation primarily supports “charitable organizations engaged in the diagnosis and treatment of alcoholism, drug addiction and other forms of substance use disorder (“SUD”).” In addition to supporting rehabilitation centers and substance abuse services, the Hanley Family Foundation makes grants for research and education on addiction.

Grants for Mental Health

The Hanley Family Foundation funds efforts to “advance the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of alcoholism, chemical dependency and addictive behavior.” Specifically, it funds research, education, and direct services related to chemical dependency, alcoholism, and addictive behavior. The foundation’s first philanthropic efforts involved collaboration with United Way of Palm Beach, Florida, which established the need for quality rehabilitation treatment centers in the area and “identified factors critical to success.” Hanley has since gone on to fund “over one hundred organizations across the United States,” including St. Jude Treatment Center, Samaritan House, Recovery Point of Huntington, WV, Magdalen House, Joshua House, and Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services.

Grants for Public Health

The Hanley Family Foundation’s grantmaking has also supported public health organizations and providers involved in addiction services and rehabilitation. Past grantees include Wake Forest University Health Sciences and Aurora Healthcare of Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
