Back in 1952, Arnold Haynes founded Haynes Management Inc., a real estate development and management company based in Wellesley Hills, Massachusetts. He and his wife, Carol, started their own philanthropic foundation in 1994 to channel their charitable giving. Since that time, the Haynes Family Foundation (HFF) has been giving hundreds of thousands of dollars to local nonprofits each year.

While HFF does not have a website or publicly share much information about its grantmaking practices and procedures, here is an overview of what we know about this funder.

Major topics of interest

Overall, education appears to be the primary topic of interest for HFF, as Arnold Haynes was involved with various schools, museums and preservation societies during his lifetime. He was passionate about reading and art, which are subjects that still guide HFF’s grantmaking today. Other interests of HFF include health, youth, the environment and community development.

Geographic preferences

The Haynes Family Foundation is based in the Greater Boston area and pays attention to local causes. HFF often awards grants to organizations in that part of Massachusetts as well as throughout the greater Northeast region. Many recent grantees are located in towns throughout New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. It is rare for grants to leave this region, but some do occasionally, to support schools with a personal connection to the Haynes family.

Example grantees

In recent years, HFF has awarded between $150,000 and $600,000 in annual grants. Most of these grants are in the range of $1,000 to $25,000 each and go toward grantees’ general operations. Grantees include the Dana Hall School in Wellesley, Massachusetts; the Lakes Region Humane Society in Ossipee, New Hampshire; and the Bennington Museum in Bennington, Vermont. Local hospitals, preservation organizations and churches have also received HFF support recently.

Current leadership

Carol Haynes passed away in 2012 at the age of 83, and Arnold Haynes passed away in 2017 at the age of 90. Today, HFF is run by the founding couple’s children, who serve as its directors. Melinda Bradley serves as the president/treasurer/director, Andrea Perry as the clerk/director and Stephen Bradley as a third director.

Prospective grantseekers should know that HFF does not accept unsolicited grant applications and only funds preselected charitable groups.
