International Centre for Women Playwrights

OVERVIEW: The International Centre for Women Playwrights runs grantmaking programs to support women playwrights with travel, professional activities and script development. Grantmaking is international in scope.

IP TAKE: The International Centre for Women Playwrights does not run any ongoing grantmaking programs, but occasionally funds grants for special populations. Grants support individual playwrights with expenses related to travel, workshop attendance and script writing and development. Applications are accepted during windows of time that are specific to each grantmaking opportunity, so grantseekers should check the organization’s website periodically and follow the centre on social media.

PROFILE: Established in 1988, the International Centre for Women Playwrights (ICWP) is a charitable organization that began in Buffalo, New York and is currently incorporated in Ohio. The organization began with a conference of women playwrights who were concerned about the dearth of women playwrights and productions of play by women. ICWP’s mission is “supporting and promoting women playwrights around the world and bringing attention to their works.”

ICWP’s grantmaking is sporadic, but it runs grantmaking programs for specific initiatives from time to time, including grants for playwrights from underrepresented groups and grants that help playwrights attend and participate in conferences, meetings and other career-related events and projects. The organization’s other activities include the organization of several on-line and in-person support and networking activities.

  • The Amy Oestriecher Grant for Women Playwrights Fund supports female playrights with disabilities.

  • Recent grants have supported women playwrights from underrepresented groups with financial support for travel, workshop attendance and other services involved in script writing and development. All grantmaking is international in scope.

  • Information about recent recipients is available at ICWPs’ grant reports page.

Important Grant Details:

IWCP grants are generally awarded in modest amounts, between $100 and $400, to individual women playwrights. The center runs open application programs for all of its grants. Women playwrights should check the grant application page periodically for updates about new opportunities. Questions may be directed to Margaret McSeveney via email.
