Nagel Foundation

IP TAKE: This is a great funder to know in the Boise area, especially for grant seekers that provide basic needs services to kids with disabilities or health issues.
PROFILE: The Nagel Foundation is based in Eagle, Idaho, and was established in 1989. It dates back to a German immigrant named John Henry Nagel who bought a soda-water company and turned it into a successful business. Nagel Beverage became a Pepsi franchisee and assumed control of the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company of Twin Falls years later. The family companies were sold to Pepsi entities in 2009 and 2013. The funder’s first grants were made in 1991, and grew to over a million dollars per year by 2007. The family increased its focus on the foundation once the businesses were sold, and committed to support basic human needs, education, and youth programs.
The foundation supports local residents with basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter. Through its basic needs program, Nagel also supports free and reduced-cost health care services for the uninsured and needy. Education support largely comes in the form of nursing scholarships at Boise State University. The family has a personal connection to the school and is passionate about the field of nursing. Funding for youth programs involves promoting a safety net for Idaho’s most vulnerable youth populations. Nonprofits that work with kids from unstable and single-parent homes typically see Nagel’s support.
Grantees include the Assistance League of Boise, Boise Rescue Mission City Light, the Boys and Girls Club of Ada County, and the Canyon County Community Clinic. Support has gone to the Idaho Hemophilia Foundation, Interfaith Sanctuary, and the Meridian Food Bank. A list of recent community grants is here. As a rule, the foundation does not support the administration of ongoing operations, large capital projects, special events, political activities, or anything outside Southwest Idaho. It accepts grant applications all year, and the preferred submission method is online form. However, grant seekers can also print the form and mail it to the foundation office.
