IP TAKE: Here is a health legacy foundation with a straightforward application process and a specific focus on young Iowa residents in need.

PROFILE: Established in 1984, the Mid-Iowa Health Foundation (MIHF) is a health legacy foundation based in Des Moines, Iowa. The foundation is the legacy of Northwest Community Hospital after the hospital’s sale and local leaders decided to carry on the hospital’s tradition. The foundation aims to "serve as a catalyst and partner for improving the health of vulnerable people in Greater Des Moines.” It funds local efforts for health, especially for children and youth.

Grants for Public Health and Access

The Mid-Iowa Health Foundation takes a broad approach to supporting local heath needs. It primarily focuses on the health of local children and youth to ensure that young residents have access to quality health and education services, are protected from adversity and have a supportive community around them. MIHF looks to assist lifelong health efforts that integrate health in local homes, workplaces, schools and neighborhoods. It addresses the fundamental causes of poor health among youth and connects with non-traditional partners to improve lifelong health. However, MIHF does not provide funding for scholarships, religious activities, capital campaigns, fundraising events, disease-specific organizations or general operations.

Past local grantees include United Way of Central Iowa, Iowa Public Radio and the Iowa Homeless Youth Centers.
