Rona Jaffe Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Rona Jaffe Foundation supports women writers in the early stages of their careers who work on literary fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction. Unsolicited applications and nominations are not accepted.

IP TAKE: There are some great opportunities here for new women writers; however, it can be tough to get in the door. Jaffe typically awards a pretty even mix of fiction, nonfiction and poetry grants each year. To qualify, you must be an individual woman that is not yet an established writer. While open-minded, this funder is not a particularly accessible source of grants. Connect with past recipients to learn more about how their work was found for funding.

PROFILE: Founded in 1995, the Rona Jaffe Foundation was created by Rona Jaffe, New York Times bestselling author of “The Best of Everything.” The foundation supports women writers in the early stages of their writing careers. It “offers grants to writers of fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry to make writing time available and provide assistance for such specific purposes as child care, research and related travel costs.”

Grants for Creative Writing and Women

The Rona Jaffe Foundation Writers’ Awards program seeks “to identify and support emergent women writers of exceptional promise in recognition of the special contributions women writers make to our culture.” The award recognizes women who write fiction, creative nonfiction, and poetry, and who are in the early stages of their career. It will not fund established writers in any genre. According to the foundation, “Competitive candidates ordinarily are beyond the student stage and need not be young in years given that talent may emerge at any age.” Grants are intended to supplement living costs in order to allow women to make time for writing and may cover child care, or research and related travel costs. Grant seekers can learn more about writing award recipients here.
