Khaki Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Khaki Foundation was created to aid the most vulnerable members of society with essential needs and education.

IP TAKE: Grantseekers working in global education may find a friend in Khaki. The foundation dedicates nearly 50 percent of its grants to education. It’s a very open-minded funder, but it’s not accessible, preferring to seek its own grantees to fund in its highly focused areas of grantmaking. Neither is it approachable. It lists no phone number for its staff, which requires interested parties to write to the foundation at the address provided below. However, don’t let that detail stop you if your work centers on this foundation’s mission. Mail them a very brief inquiry, which it does not list anywhere as not acceptable.

PROFILE: Established in 2003, the Khaki Foundation was founded by Microsoft veteran Jawad Khaki and his wife, Kaniz. The foundation seeks to help “vulnerable members of […] society with essential needs and educational endeavors to alleviate poverty and suffering.” It primarily invests in global development and global health initiatives in majority-Muslim countries, as well as in the United States and United Kingdom.

Grants for Global Health and Development

While the Khaki Foundation dedicates nearly 50 percent of its grants to education in Muslim-majority regions and developing countries, it also funds a range of global development projects, including initiatives for orphans, community centers, hunger relief, basic needs, medical care, housing, refugee services, women and the elderly. Its global grantmaking focuses on Tanzania, Afghanistan, the United Kingdom, Ghana, India, Pakistan and Iraq. Jawad himself was born in Tanzania. One recent grant went to the U.S.-based Human Development Foundation for its work in Pakistan to build solar-powered reverse osmosis water processing plants. Another recent grant supported the Tanzanian organization WIPAHS, which used funding to support its programs for orphans and other needy children. Other recent grantees include Canada’s Al-Kawthar Foundation and Pakistan’s Friends’ Medical and Educational Trust.

Important Grant Details:
