KR Foundation

OVERVIEW: The KR Foundation supports organizations addressing the root causes of climate change.

IP TAKE: This funder awards grants to risky projects that have the potential for transformative and systemic change.

PROFILE: Based in Copenhagen, Denmark, the KR Foundation was established in 2014 by the Villum Foundation and the family of civil engineer Villum Kann Rasmussen. KR aims to address and take action upon the “long-term challenges faced by current and future generations living on a planet with finite resources, fragile ecosystems, and climate change.” The foundation currently runs two grantmaking programs: Sustainable Behavior and Sustainable Finance. While it does not have a program dedicated to climate change, both programs directly support climate change efforts.

Grants for Climate Change

The Sustainable Behavior program funds efforts to “mainstream low-impact living” since “[h]ousehold consumption accounts for 72% of global greenhouse gas (ghg) emissions, which makes the transition to sustainable lifestyles an essential part of tackling climate change.” KR’s work here invests in “interventions that aim to create acceptance for ambitious policies for consumption-based emissions reductions and projects that work to change social norms on a large scale.”

The foundation’s Sustainable Finance program ultimately “supports interventions that aim to shift financial incentives and flows (such as investments, subsidies, taxes, regulation, etc.) away from fossil fuel production and consumption and onto a pathway compatible with the Paris Agreement.”
