PROFILE: Established in 2003, the REACH Foundation is a health legacy funder based in Merriam, Kansas. It formed from the proceeds of the sale of Health Midwest to the Hospital Corporation of America. The foundation aims to "advance equity in health care coverage, access, and quality for poor and underserved people.” It funds local efforts for health care coverage, policy and advocacy, insurance coverage gaps, and health safety net services.

The REACH Foundation has an “Enroll All Eligible” priority area that focuses on advancing health equity and reducing barriers to coverage and care by helping local residents enroll with health insurance providers. The funder’s “Close the Coverage Gap” priority area focuses on advocacy for citizen engagement, research to inform policy, and creating partnerships to test new coverage options. “Strong Safety Net” priority area grants provide core support for health and advocacy organizations and expand the health care workforce. The foundation also has interests in expanding Medicaid coverage, enacting fiscal policies, and preparing local populations for the census. However, REACH does not fund research, specific diseases, senior services, crisis intervention, healthy lifestyle programs, or the prevention of suicide, domestic violence, or substance abuse.

Grants range between about $5,000 and $50,000. Learn more about this funder’s local giving on the where we invest page of the funder’s website. Grantmaking focuses on a six-county service area in Kansas and Missouri. Areas of specific interest are as follows: Kansas City, Missouri; Cass, Jackson, and Lafayette counties in Missouri; and Allen, Johnson, and Wyandotte counties in Kansas. Past local grantees include Community Health Center of Southeast Kansas, Health Care Coalition of Lafayette County, and the Migrant Farmworkers Assistance Fund.

This foundation awards core operating grants by invitation only. REACH does not have a set schedule for requests for proposals, but it encourages local nonprofits to contact a program officer or sign up for its newsletter to learn about funding opportunities.
