PROFILE: Established in 1979, the Butler Foundation is the foundation of Corporex CEO Bill Butler and his wife, Sue. Corporex is an investment company that controls over $1 billion of real estate investments in 20 major U.S. markets. The Butler couple established the foundation in memory of Bill’s father, and it was originally called the Robert M. Butler Memorial Foundation. Grantmaking supports basic needs, education, social services, poverty and people with disabilities.
This foundation provides direct-service grants through its charity grants, Helping Hands hardship grants, and Butler Scholar funds to Northern Kentucky high schools and colleges. Charity grants provide start-up funds and program or operating support for local charities that address basic needs. The funder has been a big supporter of the United Way of Greater Cincinnati, Life Learning Center, and the Catalytic Fund of Northern Kentucky. Helping Hands grants are one-time, last-resort financial help to families and individuals in need. These grants fund rent, utilities, medical equipment, medications and car repairs. The Butler Foundation is part of a funders’ collaborative called NYK Funders, which supports North Kentucky nonprofits in a competitive grant process. In addition to giving through the Butler Foundation, Corporex also has a corporate giving program that focuses on education, healthcare and social service charities.
Foundation grants vary in size on a case-by-case basis. It does not have an online grants database. Foundation grantmaking is focused on Northern Kentucky, where Bill and Sue Butler are lifelong residents. It awards many grants in the Covington area of Kentucky. The foundation occasionally considers multi-year grants and challenge grants.
The Butler Foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from local nonprofits. It has spring and fall grant cycles and submission deadlines of March 1 and October 1. Expect to hear back with a funding decision within about 10 days of the foundation’s review meeting. There are no specific forms to complete, but there are certain documents that the foundation requires.
