IP TAKE: This funder is concerned as much (or more) about health as about religion in its grantmaking. Grant seekers looking for a one-year grant, should not write off Good Samaritan for secular health programs in the community.
PROFILE: The Good Samaritan Foundation (GSF) is affiliated with the United Methodist Church and is a ministry of the Kentucky Annual Conference. It seeks to “make financial grants through its annual grants program to charitable and educational activities related to health care and health education in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.” The Kentucky Annual Conference of The United Methodist Church includes more than 150,000 members in over 800 churches. The conference office is located in Crestwood, Kentucky.
Grants are limited to the state of Kentucky and guided by United Methodist Church principles. It gives mostly to primary and preventative health programs that serve low-income and uninsured individuals. However, GSF does not support brick-and-mortar projects, general operating costs, administrative costs, or non-medical equipment.
In the past, the yearly grant application cycle has opened up on the first of January and run through the first of March. Then, the grant cycle is from July 1 to June 30, with grants lasting for one year. Applications are reviewed by the board of trustees’ grants review committee. The full GSF board makes final determinations about new grants.

Other grant opportunities exist outside this foundation which are still affiliated with the church group. For example, there are the Frank King Fund grants and the Eastern Kentucky UM Health Education and Welfare Fund. The King Fund provides $3,000 grants to churches for additions and improvements. The Eastern Kentucky UM fund has been supporting healthcare programs in Eastern Kentucky since 2005.
