Other education grantees are large national organizations that provide out-of-school learning experiences in the STEM disciplines.

This corporate funder stopped accepting applications in 2021. Organizations operating in a community where Lockheed Martin maintains operations may reach out to local leadership for information about grantmaking opportunities.

Grants for STEM Education

Lockheed Martin’s STEM funding supports outreach programs for K-12 through postsecondary students, as well as professional development programs for teachers and initiatives that encourage students from underrepresented groups to pursue careers in STEM disciplines. A significant portion of Lockheed’s STEM funding consists of signature programs developed by Lockheed Martin professionals. Recent programs include CodeQuest, a programming competition for high school students created by the company’s IT professionals, and Engineers in the Classroom, which involves engineering employees at primary and secondary schools as mentors, tutors and program facilitators. STEM grants mainly support out-of-school learning opportunities run by national organizations including Girls Inc., Project Lead the Way and FIRST Robotics. It is worth mentioning that Lockheed Martin also awards 200 STEM college scholarships of $10,000 and 150 vocational scholarships of $6,600 each year.

Grants for Military and Veterans

Lockheed Martin maintains a deep commitment to the well-being of the U.S. military community; more than half of the company’s business is with the military and other U.S. agencies, and military-affiliated individuals comprise more than one-fifth of its workforce. Specific areas of interest for the company’s military- and veteran-related philanthropy include support for service members and families, helping veterans transition to civilian life, honoring the legacy of U.S. veterans and research and policy development for military and veteran’s services. Lockheed Martin has recently supported Blue Star Families, an organization that conducts research and outreach programs for military families. Another grantee, Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families, provides veterans with education and counseling to develop rewarding post-military careers. Other recent grantees include the United Service Organizations, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Hiring Our Heroes initiative, Student Veterans of America and the Congressional Medal of Honor Foundation.

Other Grantmaking Opportunities

It is worth noting that Lockheed Martin runs two employee-focused contribution programs: a matching contributions programs for colleges and universities of interest to its employees and an employee disaster relief fund for situations in which employees are “affected by natural or terroristic disasters of a catastrophic nature.” Applications for both programs are available on the corporation’s website.
