McKesson Foundation

OVERVIEW: The McKesson Foundation makes grants cancer prevention and disease equity.

IP TAKE: This corporate funder focuses specifically on services for cancer patients including housing, mental health care and basic needs. The McKesson Foundation recently began to operate a formal application program, a change from previous years, and has become not only more accessible, but now accepts unsolicited applications. This corporate funder gives at both the local level, where it has offices, and at the national level.

According to the foundation, it further “amplifies its impact in the communities where Team McKesson lives, works and operates by promoting employee volunteerism and bolstering charitable giving” through employee volunteerism and a Matching Gift program that “doubles their donations and awards grants for individual and team volunteering.” This is another viable way to get onto this funder’s radar.

PROFILE: Founded in 1943, the McKesson Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the healthcare technology company of the same name. The foundation is on a mission to “remove barriers to quality healthcare across North America, especially for vulnerable and underserved communities.” The McKesson Foundation works with its partners to “reduce the risk of getting cancer and address socioeconomic barriers to care.”

Grants for Diseases

Working with its partners, the McKesson Foundation aims to “reduce the risk of getting cancer and address socioeconomic barriers to care.” Funding priorities of this funder’s giving include support for:

  • Cancer prevention, which centers on providing “education and services to encourage people to adopt healthy diets, exercise regularly, avoid tobacco, and protect their skin.”

  • Cancer and disease screening and treatment.

  • Financial/Logistical Assistance to connect “uninsured and underinsured patients to programs providing low or no-cost co-pays and social determinants of health (SDOH) interventions.”

  • Closing the gap between “diverse representation among the general population and among healthcare practitioners will improve health equity and patient outcomes.”

  • Accelerating crisis response.

Rather than creating distinct grantmaking programs, this funder chooses to give more broadly in the above areas, so that it can entertain a wider variety of ideas and projects.

Important Grant Details:

McKesson’s grants generally range from $25,000 or more. The McKesson Foundation now accepts unsolicited requests for funding or grant proposals.

  • Grant applications are due February 1 through April 30 each year. It accepts funding requests up to $25,000 year-round.

  • For organizations working at a national level, program scope can be across the United States and/or Canada or in targeted regions.

  • For organizations working locally or regionally, McKesson has eight priority locations: Atlanta, Ga.; Columbus, Ohio; Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas; Houston, Texas; Memphis, Tenn.; Montreal, Quebec; Richmond, Va.; and Toronto, Ontario. As the foundation states, “funding to local organizations serving outside these communities is unlikely to be approved.”

The foundation encourages organizations whose work aligns with the foundation’s priorities to get in touch by submitting a one-page description to mckessonfoundation@mckesson.com.
