FUNDING AREAS: Environment, conservation, native wildlife, plants, ecosystems

IP TAKE: This is a very targeted funder that has strict guidelines for what it funds; however, it is also an accessible environmental funder for nonprofits in Montana.

PROFILE: Established in 1997, the Temper of the Times Foundation (TTF) is a private foundation based in Missoula, Montana. The board of directors of The Moneypaper, Inc., a publishing company that specializes in financial news, created this foundation. The foundation aims to "promote the use of standard marketing concepts for increasing awareness about wildland conservation and restoration initiatives.” TTF funds local efforts for the environment, conservation and the restoration of native wildlife, plants and ecosystems.

The Temper of the Times Foundation commonly supports advertising campaigns for environmental organizations because these organizations typically have limited funds for this purpose. It also funds earned media campaigns and communication efforts that relate to initiatives for conservation and restoration. TTF only supports nonprofits and not government agencies, individuals or for-profit organizations. TTF’s grants are used for print, radio and television ads, as well as to pay for airtime, pamphlet distribution and advertising space. However, funding does not fund general organizational support, membership campaigns, staff salaries or organizational newsletters.

Grants range between about $5,000 and $15,000. Learn more about this funder’s local giving by examining its recent tax records. Grantmaking focuses on Montana and also nationwide to address needs throughout the U.S. Past local grantees include the Center for Large Landscape Conservation in Bozeman and the Clark Fork Coalition in Missoula.

This foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits. It has an annual December 15th deadline for applications and uses an online application system to receive new funding requests. Nonprofits can expect to receive a decision from TTF approximately six weeks after the deadline. Direct general questions to the staff at temperfund@igc.org or 914-925-0022.
