Erion Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Erion Foundation is dedicated to enriching lives in Loveland and Northern Colorado through funding, advocacy and participation.

IP TAKE: The foundation prioritizes grants for capital projects, specific programs, and joint ventures with other funders.

PROFILE: Established in 1986, the Erion Foundation was founded by Ken and Helen Erion. The Erions began a directory-publishing business that grew and became the Johnson Publishing Company family of companies located in Loveland, Colorado. The foundation’s president is now their son, Doug. The Erion Foundation is dedicated to enriching lives in Loveland and Northern Colorado through funding, advocacy and participation.

The foundation balances its grantmaking between five general areas of interest: 1) Major Project Advocacy 2) Health and Welfare 3) Basic Needs 4) Education 5) Culture and Community. The foundation prefers grants for capital projects, specific programs, and joint ventures with other funders. The Erion Foundation also established three legacy grants that are the only operations grants: the House of Neighborly Service, Meals on Wheels, and The Community Kitchen, all located in Loveland, Colorado.

The Foundation’s grants fall into two categories: large grants of $10,000 or more; and small grants of less than $10,000. Grants greater than $50,000 generally will be part of an advocacy project, and full funding takes places over several years. In a recent year, the foundation gave away around $180,000. Grantmaking focuses on Northern Colorado, including in the Loveland Planning Area. Past local grantees include Loveland Opera Theatre, Alliance Bible Church, and Artspace Projects.

The foundation is not currently accepting grant applications. Organizations must complete an application packet that includes the completed foundation Grant Application Form, a copy of the organization’s active IRS designation letter, and a copy of the first page of its most recent 990 IRS Form.
