PROFILE: Established in 1924, the Victoria Foundation is the Newark, New Jersey-based foundation of Hendon Chubb. The bulk of his wealth came from the provision of Chubb stock holdings, the insurance company that his father started. He named the foundation after his mother, Victoria Eddis Chubb. The foundation focused on ending the cycle of poverty in Newark since the 1960s and added the second priority of protecting the environment in New Jersey in the 1970s. It is one of the oldest private foundations in the U.S. and aims to “improve the lives of children and families in need in Newark, New Jersey and to protect water resources and preserve precious open space statewide.” Grantmaking includes education, neighborhood development, urban activities, youth and families, and the environment.
The foundation funds for improving the education of young people and stabilizing and revitalizing local neighborhoods. It also awards grants to promote civic engagement, leadership, job training, and job placement. Priorities also include strengthening families to prevent crises and helping children develop into healthy and productive adults.
