PROFILE: The Community Foundation of NC East (CFNCE) was established in 1977 and supports philanthropy in eastern North Carolina. It seeks to provide “giving opportunities that directly benefit our region forever and convening resources and ideas to create a positive change in our community.” Dr. Herbert Hadley, a local physician, formed the City of Greenville Foundation, which transformed into the Greater Greenville Community Foundation and finally into the Community Foundation of NC East. The recent name change reflects a broader donor base and more towns in the region served, but the funder is still based in Greenville, North Carolina.

This community foundation supports a wide range of local nonprofits, as well as government agencies, nonprofit schools and religious organizations for non-religious purposes. Grant sizes range widely, so the foundation advises groups to apply for the actual amount needed to complete the specified project. Only one grant is awarded per organization in a calendar year, and several funds offer multiyear support. Grant seekers do not have to be located in Greenville to receive a grant, but they do have to be in eastern North Carolina. As a rule, this funder does not support purchases of computer hardware and software, vehicles, expenses related to conferences, capital funding or research. It also does not make grants to individuals.

Past grantees include the Humane Society of Eastern Carolina, Pitt County Arts Council, Reading Radio Service, College of the Albemarle, Oakmont Baptist Church and many more local groups. The foundation also provides pass-through funds for regional organizations as they have grown to become 501(c)3 nonprofits. Pass-through funds have supported Bryson's Birdies for Kids, HBOT for Veterans and the Oakwood School Board Development Fund. A more complete list of grantees is here.

In a recent year, this foundation held about $8 million in total assets and made about $1.4 million in grants. Current financial data is here.

A list of current funds, some of them donor-advised, is published on the foundation’s website, but the foundation does not provide application forms or grant application guidelines for any of its grantmaking opportunities. The best way to get information about grants is to call or email the foundation staff.
