PROFILE: Established in 2018, the Dogwood Health Trust (DHT) is a health legacy funder based in Asheville, North Carolina. It formed following the sale of Mission Health to HCA Healthcare and became fully operational in February 2019. The foundation mission involves “dramatically improving the health and well-being of all people and communities of Western North Carolina.” DHT’s current grantmaking focuses on housing, education, economic opportunity, health and wellness and racial equity. The foundation has acknowledged that its grantmaking areas of interest “intertwine” and it welcomes projects that address more than one of its target areas. The foundation has also indicated that its grants are designated for capacity building and capital requests in situations “which include other sources of support.”

Still in its early years of grantmaking, this funder has yet to name specific goals or initiatives within its areas of interest. Recent grants have gone to the Blue Ridge Free Dental Clinic, the homelessness prevention program Homeward Bound, Rutherford County Area Habitat for Humanity and St. Gerard House, which provides services and education for individuals with autism and their families.

DHT has over $1 billion in assets and made about $5.5 million in grants in a recent year. Grantmaking is strictly limited to organizations working with populations in the western part of North Carolina. This funder supports organizations of every size that align with its funding interests. For additional information about past grantmaking, see the foundation’s partner profiles page.

Still in its earliest years of grantmaking, this funder has changed its grantmaking cycles and due dates from year to year; grantseekers should consult its grantmaking page for the most up-to-date information about how to apply. General inquiries may be submitted to the foundation via email.
