IP TAKE: The GAR staff reviews new letters of inquiry every week, so there is no bad time to introduce an Akron-focused organization to this funder.

PROFILE: Established in 1967, the GAR Foundation is a private foundation based in Akron, Ohio. This is the foundation of Galen and Ruth Roush. With his brother, Galen Roush co-founded Roadway Express in 1930, which became the largest long-haul trucking company in the U.S. The Roushs were deeply committed to their local community and wished to carry on their legacy of giving after they passed. The foundation aims to "help Akron become smarter, stronger, and more vibrant.” It funds local efforts for early childhood education, K-16 education, economic and workforce development, basic needs, arts and culture and nonprofit sector advancement.

The GAR Foundation’s priorities follow local research and take a cross-sector approach to high-priority issues around Akron. The funder looks to improve kindergarten readiness and support youth throughout their educations. It also addresses income inequality and stunted economic growth. GAR is concerned with the poverty rates in Akron, especially children living below the poverty level. Other GAR support goes towards making the local arts and culture sector more vibrant and enhancing the skills of nonprofit leaders to promote long-term sustainability. Occasionally, GAR offers an application round for capital grant requests in addition to its regular project and program grants.

Grants range between about $25,000 and $300,000. Learn more about this funder’s local giving on the grants awarded page of the funder’s website. Grantmaking focuses on Akron and Summit County, Ohio. Past local grantees include the Akron Art Museum, Open Tone Music and First Glance Student Center.

This foundation accepts unsolicited letters of inquiry from nonprofits. Grantseekers should submit LOIs via online system by established dates in April, July and November. The full application deadlines are typically in May, August and December. Direct general questions to the staff at info@garfdn.org or 330-576-2926.
