Mathile Family Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Mathile Family Foundation supports education and the needs of children and families in the Dayton area of Ohio.

IP TAKE: This is a good education-centric funder to know in Ohio, but understand that it has strong Christian leanings and often supports Catholic schools. This funder accepts letters of inquiry at any time and offers small grants. Expect the Mathiles to remain focused on their local community. Jennifer and the couple’s other kids should be watched as philanthropy deepens into the next generation.

PROFILE: Established in 1989, the Mathile Family Foundation (MFF) is a private foundation based in Dayton, Ohio. This is the foundation of MaryAnn and Clayton Mathile, who are from northern Ohio. Clayton Mathile was born on a farm in Ohio and graduated from Ohio Northern University. He worked as an accountant at the Campbell Soup Company, and in 1970 became one of pet food maker Iams’ first employees. He bought the company in 1982. P&G acquired it from him for $2.3 billion in 1999.

The foundation aims to share "God's blessings by perpetuating a multi-generational foundation committed to philanthropic excellence.” MFF funds local efforts for education, children and families in the area.

Grants for K-12 Education

The Mathile Family Foundation works to meet the educational, socio-emotional and physical needs of children and families in the greater Dayton area. A majority of its grants go to organizations working in early childhood and K-12 settings, including Catholic schools since the foundation believes that “Catholic schools develop the solid moral and community values that prepare students to be lifelong models of strong character and compassion.”

The foundation supports City Connects, an “evidence based student support program” created by Boston College. Clayton Mathile created Aileron, a Dayton-based school that offers management training for small business owners, and continues to support the institution via his foundation.
