Mercy Work Foundation of Oklahoma

OVERVIEW: The Mercy Work Foundation of Oklahoma supports animal welfare organizations across the state of Oklahoma.

FUNDING AREAS: Animal welfare

IP TAKE: Animal shelters and nonprofits that help local dogs and cats in need should contact this Oklahoma-focused foundation.

PROFILE: Established in 1992, the Mercy Work Foundation of Oklahoma is a private foundation that serves the state of Oklahoma. This is the foundation of the late Leah Cohn Arendt of Oklahoma City. Arendt’s family established this foundation to continue the tradition of her love of animals and rescuing them when they had nowhere else to go. Managed by Bank of America’s Texas office, the foundation seeks to “perpetually care for small animals.” Therefore, this funder solely focuses on animal welfare.

This funder regularly gives to Oklahoma-based nonprofits that provide care, food, shelter, and veterinary services and protection for dogs and cats. The foundation also aims to protect stray, abandoned, injured, sick, and homeless puppies, dogs, kittens, and cats.

Grants range between $5,000 and $20,000. Learn more about this funder’s local giving by examining its Foundation Center grant history. Grantmaking focuses on Oklahoma. Past local grantees include the Oklahoma State University Foundation and the Humane Society of Cherokee County. Arendt’s estate also helped to fund the construction of the Cohn Pet Care Facility and keep the facility in good condition with ongoing upgrades.

This foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits. The annual application deadline is June 15, and applicants can expect to hear back with a funding decision within about three to four months after this date. Grant seekers must use the Bank of America online system to apply for a grant. Direct general questions to the staff at tx.philanthropic@ustrust.com or 800-357-7094.
