FUNDING AREAS: Human services, youth, people with disabilities, arts and culture, the elderly, basic needs

IP TAKE: The number of grants awarded each year is limited, but unlike other funders in the region, NCF’s focus is pretty much wholly on a single town.

PROFILE: Established in 1995, the Norman Community Foundation (NCF) is based in Norman, Oklahoma. As a community funder, it channels funds from donors to groups in town. NCF is managed by the Communities Foundation of Oklahoma but it is governed by a board of directors that represent the Norman area. Top interests are human services, youth, people with disabilities, arts and culture, the elderly, and basic needs.

NCF supports any community philanthropic organization that serves the city of Norman and its citizens. Grants have gone to the Norman Philharmonic, Meals on Wheels, and Food and Shelter Inc., the National Weather and Science Museum, NAIC, the Norman Arts Council, Full Circle Adult Day Care and the Center for Children and Families. An NCF testimonial video is available here. As a community foundation, NCF manages a number of funds: donor-advised, scholarships, community, field-of-interest, unrestricted, agency endowment, and escrow.

Foundation grants are often a few hundred or thousand dollars in size. View a list of recent grant recipients on the funder’s website. The foundation rarely funds causes outside the city of Norman, Oklahoma.

NCF accepts unsolicited grant requests from local groups. There is a single grant application for any NCF grant, and the application is online. Grant seekers will need to create an account unless they already have one on the Communities Foundation of Oklahoma’s online grant portal. The foundation has a news page and an events page, where grant seekers can see what the organization has been up to lately.
