PROFILE: Established in 1998, the Ann & Bill Swindells Charitable Trust is a private foundation in Portland, Oregon. William “Bill” Swindells passed away in 2018 at the age of 88. He led the Willamette Valley Lumber Company that became Willamette Industries and established the trust with his wife, Ann. The couple was involved with local businesses, universities, historical societies, and the Oregon Community Foundation. The foundation seeks to “contribute to organizations whose principal mission is to improve the quality of life of the citizens of Oregon and to assist and sustain the educational, cultural, and scientific endeavors of the state.” Grantmaking supports education, arts and culture, science, civic engagement, health and welfare, and social services.

The Swindells Charitable Trust predominately makes grants for projects and programs rather than for annual operating budgets, fundraising activities, or financial emergencies. Within its areas of grantmaking, the trust prefers a broad, undefined approach so that it may consider a wider range of work.

Grants range between $2,000 and $1 million. Learn more about this funder’s past giving by examining its recent tax records. Grant seekers can also view a list of past award recipients on the funder’s website. Grantmaking is restricted to organizations working in or benefitting Oregon state. Past local grantees include Hoyt Arboretum, Oregon Public Broadcasting, Special Olympics Oregon, and Trillium Family Services.

The trust is not currently accepting new or unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits. In the past, the funder has met quarterly on or about the first of the months of March, June, September, and December. It has accepted brief proposals on an unsolicited basis in the past.
