PROFILE: The Juan Young Trust (JYT) was established in the 1990s and started making grants in February 2000, under the direction of the will of Juan Young. It seeks to “provide grants to 501(c)(3) organizations that promote the health, education and welfare of children under 21 years old, in the state of Oregon.” Young was an employee, officer, and stockholder of Kienow’s Food Stores. This trust was established with a formative intention to terminate within 30 years.
This foundation awards grants only to Oregon-based organizations. Most grants support causes in the Portland area. In its grantmaking, the funder defines children as anyone under the age of 21.
JYT typically awards one-year and two-year grants. It rarely funds annual operating budgets, debt retirement or religious causes. It also does not fund PRIs, grants to individuals except for scholarships, or grants to private foundations.

To apply for a grant, contact the foundation to get the two-page application. It is not downloadable from the funder’s website. This application includes a narrative proposal, tax information, board of directors list, proposed budget form, and a statement of the current financial condition.
Grantmaking is managed and controlled solely by two individual trustees. The Eastern Division reviews grant requests from groups east of the Willamette River and the Cascade Range. The Western Division reviews requests west of these landmarks. The foundation reviews new requests once per quarter, so the grantmaking deadlines are December 31, March 31, June 30 and September 30. Grant proposals do not carry over to the next quarter if denied.
In addition to grants, the foundation awards scholarships to decedents of former Kienow’s Food Stores employees and secondarily, to the general population of Oregon students.
