Point Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Point Foundation offers scholarships to LGBTQ students across the country.

IP TAKE: The Point Foundation is a great ally of LGBTQ students across the U.S. This funder is both accessible and approachable, making modest grants to support LGBTQ individuals in higher education. Application deadlines and requirements vary by scholarship, so applicants will want to look over the information carefully. Scholarships are available to students regardless of nationality or citizenship status; however, the school must be based in the U.S.

It is also worth noting that the foundation posts scholarship recipients’ names and photos on its website, so students who are not fully out will want to keep this in mind when they apply.

PROFILE: Founded in 2001 by Bruce Lindstrom and Carl Strickland, the Point Foundation is the country’s “[l]argest scholarship granting organization” focusing on LGBTQ students. Based in Los Angeles, the foundation aims to empower LGBTQ students to “[a]chieve their full academic and leadership potential—despite the obstacles often put before them—to make a significant impact on society.”

Grants for LGBTQ

The foundation’s three scholarship programs strictly fund LGBTQ students:

  • The Flagship Scholarship is available to students enrolled in accredited four-year colleges and universities for undergraduate, graduate, & doctoral degrees in the United States. To qualify, students must have a track record of strong academic achievement, financial need and involvement in community services, especially work with LGBTQ people and communities. The BIPOC Scholarship goes to Black, indigenous, and people of color LGBTQ students enrolled in a community college, four-year college/university, or graduate program accredited in the U.S.

  • The foundation also runs a Community College Program for students pursuing degrees at community colleges and vocational schools.

Important Grant Details:

The Point Foundation accepts applications for its scholarships between October and March of each academic year. For additional information about eligibility, see each scholarship’s application page.
