Tina & Steven Price Charitable Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Tina & Steven Price Charitable Foundation is the philanthropic vehicle of New York area couple Steven and Tina Price. The foundation strongly supports the Jewish community in New York City. Other interests include education and health. Philanthropy largely tracks with the family’s personal ties and board memberships.

IP TAKE: This foundation is not transparent, preferring to keep a low profile. It is also not accessible, preferring a proactive approach to grantmaking, so it does not appear to accept unsolicited proposals. As with many smaller foundations of this type, networking is likely one of the only ways for grantseekers to secure funding. This is a tough nut to crack.

PROFILE: The Tina & Steven Price Charitable Foundation is the family foundation of Steven Price and his wife Tina. Steven Price graduated from Brown University and earned his J.D. from Columbia University School of Law. He spent several years at Centerbridge Partners, a private equity firm where he led the firm’s investment efforts in telecom, technology and media. In 2010, he founded Townsquare Media, a media, entertainment and digital marketing solutions company. In 2015, Price became a minority owner of the Atlanta Hawks, an NBA franchise team. The foundation focuses much of its grantmaking on New York City. The Prices are active in the local Jewish community and serve on several key boards.

Grants for Jewish Causes

While the Price Charitable Foundation does not appear to have clearly defined grantmaking programs, tax records indicate that funding for the U.S. and international Jewish communities and advocacy for Israel are the foundation’s top area of support, and grants in all other funding areas overlap considerably with this space. And as with all of this funder’s areas of support, grantmaking for the American Jewish community tends to stay within the New York City area.

The foundation strongly supports the UJA Federation of New York, and Tina Price is on the board of directors. Other NYC area Jewish grantees include the Columbia Barnard Hillel, which Tina also chairs; the Jewish Theological Seminary; the Museum of Jewish Heritage and Mechon Hedar, "a NYC area educational institution seeking to empower Jews to create and sustain vibrant, practicing, egalitarian communities."

Youth community development grantmaking has gone to Birthright Israel and BBYO. Other grantees have included American Jewish Committee, the Westchester Jewish Council, the World Union for Progressive Judaism, and the American Israel Education Foundation.

In addition to advocacy for Israel, the foundation also supports the Israel Free Loan Association, Friends of Israel Defense Forces, and Machne Israel Development Fund, which "disburses critical sums toward the support of Chabad-Lubavitch centers," among others.

The couple has supported Jewish religious institutions like Jewish Theological Seminary, as well as organizations that work for Jewish women, such as Project Kesher, whose aim is to "transform women's lives, restoring their Jewish identity and providing training in Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Moldova, Georgia, Kazakhstan, and Israel."

Grants for Higher Education

Apart from Jewish causes, the Price Foundation also funds educational institutions in New York. Previous grantees in this space include Barnard College, Columbia Law School and Yeshiva Ohavei Torah in Riverdale.

The Price Foundation is greatly involved with Hillel International, where Tina serves as a chair. It has also supported Hillel at the family’s respective alma maters (Brown University and Barnard College), in addition to a range of other chapters. Tina Price is on the board of the Israel on Campus Coalition, another group that also receives ongoing funding from the foundation. Other grantees have included Yeshiva Ohavei Torah; BBYO; Camp Szarvas; and Mechon Hadar, a "NYC-area educational institution seeking to empower Jews to create & sustain vibrant, practicing, egalitarian communities."

Grants for Arts and Culture

The foundation does not have a specific program to support arts and culture, but tax records indicate that it supports arts organizations in the New York City area, particularly those with ties to the Jewish community. The foundation has supported the Museum of Jewish Heritage, National Yiddish Theatre, Commentary Magazine, the Jewish Review of Booksand more. It is worth noting that Price also helped fund a PBS program called Elusive Justice: The Search for Nazi War Criminals.

Grants for Public Health

The foundation also earmarks funds for healthcare and human services. Grantees have included Mount Sinai Breast Health Resource Program, and Met Council, which provides low-income city residents with social services.
