Alexander and Margaret Stewart Trust

OVERVIEW: The Alexander and Margaret Stewart Trust supports organizations working in pediatric cancer and other illnesses in the Metro Washington, D.C., region.

IP TAKE: The Stewart Trust supports organizations both large and small. Grant seekers outside of this area will be hardpressed to secure funding; however, this is a great local ally to have in the pediatric health and science research space. This funder is accessible and transparent, accepting unsolicited applications at specific times during the year. For few organizations outside of the trust’s target geographic area, work must benefit the District of Columbia. On occasion, the trust does award grants to organizations operating outside the D.C. region, typically to institutions located in other large metro areas, such as New York.

First-time applicants must go through a two-step process. They must create a new account and complete an LOI through the online grant application system. Potential new applicant will be contacted by the trustees to submit a proposal if appropriate.

PROFILE: The Alexander and Margaret Stewart Trust was established in 1947, and has since supported organizations that are “researching, treating, and preventing cancer and pediatric illnesses.” The Stewart Trust’s grantmaking is primarily limited to the Metro DC area, including parts of Maryland and Virginia.

  • The trust also makes grants for cancer research invests in “promising early-career scientists seeking cures for cancer exclusively through (the) Pew-Stewart Scholars for Cancer Research program,” which is a partnership between the two institutions. According to the trust, applicants are nominated annually by “NCI-designated Cancer Centers in the U.S., and selected by a Pew-Stewart Committee of nationally-recognized cancer scientists.”
