Sustainable Arts Foundation

OVERVIEW: Sustainable Arts Foundation makes grants to artists and writers trying to find a suitable balance between parenting responsibilities and creative pursuits. It also supports the efforts of residency programs to become more accessible for the families of artists who cannot leave their children at home during their award period.

IP TAKE: In 2023, this funder committed to spend down and will disburse the foundation’s remaining funds to local tribes, California Native programs, and Native-led national organizations. It is no longer accepting applications for any of its programs.

PROFILE: Created in 2010, the Sustainable Arts Foundation (SAF) was founded by Caroline and Tony Grant, son of James Grant, painter and sculptor. It seeks to support “artists and writers with children.” Foundation grantmaking takes a two-pronged approach; it makes unrestricted grants to individual artists with young children and supports artists residencies’ efforts to make their programs more family friendly. SAF awards at least half of their grants to individual artists and organizations led by people of color.

Grants for Creative Writing, Visual Arts and Journalism

The foundation’s Artist Grants program supports individual artists and writers with children. Twenty $5,000 grants are awarded annually. New grantseekers can look over recent grantees to get a better sense of the types of artists and projects the foundation funds. View application guidelines and apply here.

This funder’s Parent-Friendly Residencies program works to help residency programs become more family friendly and accessible for artists and writers with young children. According to the program page, “eligible organizations can apply to support existing programs, or to modify or create programs that address the needs of parent applicants.” SAF emphasizes that one of the program’s goals is to share the results of original and effective solutions, “so that other residencies might learn from them as well.” Potential grantees are encouraged to look over SAF’s application page for complete guidelines and due dates. Grantseekers should also learn more about previous grantees and review FAQ before downloading and emailing the application form.

Important Grant Details:

While grant amounts are modest, SAF does award up to twenty each year. The grant cycle for individual artists usually ramps up early in the calendar year, and the application deadline for residency grants generally lands in late summer/early fall. Keep an eye on the foundation’s website for details.
