PROFILE: The Saint-Gobain Foundation is the charitable arm of the North American branch of Saint-Gobain, a multinational manufacturer of construction and high-performance materials headquartered outside of Paris, France. Saint-Gobain is dedicated to “strengthening the foundations of our communities through national grants, community outreach and direct employee support.” It makes Direct Grants, Community Gifts and Employee Matching Gifts in three primary focus areas: sustainable habitat, STEM education and community development. Saint-Gobain also partners with YouthBuild USA to support the signature YouthBuild Partnership and runs and Emergency Assistance Fund for its employees. Grants prioritize more than 150 locations in the U.S. and Canada where the company does business.

Grants for Environment, Housing and Community Development

Saint-Gobain supports community conservation, housing initiatives and community development via its sustainable habitat and local communities giving areas. Sustainable habitat grantmaking focuses on “[t]he interaction between people, buildings and the environment,” while community development grants tend to focus on housing.

Grants support local chapters of Habitat for Humanity, Homes for Our Troops and the United Way. Smaller organizations to receive support include

Grants for STEM Education

Saint-Gobain names STEM education as a main area of grantmaking interest. The foundation supports the YouthBuild Partnership, which provides vocational training in construction and academic support to students from participating school districts. It has also supported educational programs at YMCAs, Boys and Girls Clubs and public school districts in the U.S. and Canada.

Grants for Humanitarian Relief

The Saint-Gobain Foundation offers an Emergency Assistance Fund for “unexpected circumstances such as a national disaster, military deployment, or other qualifying events.” These grants are available only to current or retired employees of Saint-Gobain and their families. However, the foundation has made grants to the American Red Cross during emergencies and disasters over the years.
