Baughman Family Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Baughman Family Foundation supports health, the elderly, animals, arts, culture, humanities, education, environmental services, environment, medical research, patient and family support, shelter and crisis services, social services and youth services in South Carolina and other places of interest to the family.

IP TAKE: This is a very family-oriented foundation in which a nonprofit organization often needs to have a personal connection to a family member to secure a grant. Smaller organizations have the best short here, and programs and causes that enable the foundation to make a direct impact are prioritized.

PROFILE: Established in 2009, the Baughman Family Foundation (BFF) is a private family foundation based in Sunset, South Carolina. This is the foundation of Dave Baughman and Debbie Marinelli Baughman, who started this foundation to encourage members of their families to be involved with philanthropy. The foundation aims to " make a tangible impact on our communities by focusing on small, local organizations that are researched and recommended by family members.” It funds local efforts for health, the elderly, animals, arts, culture, humanities, education, environmental services, environment, medical research, patient and family support, shelter and crisis services, social services and youth services.

Grants for Animal Welfare and Wildlife, Arts and Culture, Education, Environment, Science Research, Public Health and Access, and Community Development

The Baughman Family Foundation supports small local organizations that are close to the hearts of family members. BFF originally only took grant recommendations from board members but later opened up the process to all family members. The funder awards grants to a wide variety of nonprofit needs. Common recipients include animal rescue centers, libraries, volunteer fire departments, disease research organizations, hospitals, hospice organizations, and programs for senior services. Mental health associations, food banks, youth camps and baseball associations also receive BFF grants.

Past local grantees include Girls on the Run Charleston, Camp iRock and South Carolina Charities. See more previous grantees here.

Important Grant Details:

Grants range between about $3,000 and $5,000. Grantmaking focuses on communities where Baughman family members live and work, especially in South Carolina.

This foundation does not typically accept unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits but rather requests that family members who want to nominate an organization for a grant work with that organization to complete an application. Submission dates are March 10, July 10 and October 10. BFF accepts applications electronically and by hard copy via mail. Direct general questions to the staff at info@baughmanfamilyfoundation.org.
