PROFILE: Established in 1984, the Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation (SFACF) is a community foundation based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Attorney Marvin K. Bailin was instrumental in creating the foundation beginning in 1969, and the foundation hired its first part-time executive director, Rosemary Draeger, in 1984. The foundation aims to unite “donors, organizations, and interests around a common goal — building permanent charitable endowments that are used to strengthen local communities, for good, forever.” It funds local efforts for education, community affairs and development, environment, health, children and families, arts and culture, veterans, and human services.

The Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation has two grantmaking programs through its unrestricted community fund endowments. Spot grant requests are for $2,500 or less and designed to fund projects that need quick support. Meanwhile, community fund grants are larger and have a more formal application process. Arts grants support theater, music, dance, historical preservation, library programs, museums, and cultural development. Community affairs grants support parks and recreation, economic development, and employment training. Education grants support formal education settings and education facilities. Environment grants help protect natural areas, conserve energy, reduce pollution, and protect water quality. Health grants address substance abuse, mental health, research, and the improvement of healthcare. Human services grants assist youth, the elderly, the disabled, and others in need.

Grants range between about $1,000 and $20,000. Learn more about this funder’s local giving on the grants page of the funder’s website. Grantmaking focuses on the Sioux Falls area of South Dakota. SFACF’s service area includes Minnehaha, Lincoln, Turner, and McCook counties and also any communities within a 25-mile radius of Sioux Falls. Past local grantees include Establishing Sustainable Connections, Great Plains Zoo & Delbridge Museum, and Warriors Never Give Up.

This foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits. SFACF accepts small grant requests under $2,500 at any time of the year. It accepts letters of inquiry from nonprofits at any time for larger grants and invites selected nonprofits to submit full applications.
