The family is behind Hospital Corp. of America (HCA), which owns and operates some 180 hospitals and close to 120 surgical centers in some two dozen U.S. states and London. The foundation does not maintain a website, which makes it difficult to locate further information on its priority areas and grantmaking strategies. Frist Foundation funds grantmaking related to health, religious causes, youth, education, the arts, and other causes largely in the Nashville area.

 Grants range from $130 to $250,000. In a recent fiscal year, the foundation gave away around $2.1 million. Past grantees include Nations Ministry Center, United Way of Williamson County, 100 Black Men of Middle Tennessee, Siloam Family Health Center, Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee, Ensworth School, and Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee.
