Community Foundation of the Brazos Valley

OVERVIEW: The Community Foundation of the Brazos Valley supports a range of education, community, and other nonprofit causes in the seven-county Brazos Valley in Texas.

IP TAKE:  The biggest opportunities here are with the unrestricted field-of-interest funds. Funding interests are broad, so all Brazos Valley nonprofits should get to know CFBV.

PROFILE: Established in 2003, the Community Foundation of the Brazos Valley (CFBV) is based in Bryan, Texas, and serves a seven-county region. It seeks to improve “the quality of life in the Brazos Valley through the development of philanthropic giving, responsible grantmaking, professional stewardship and collaborative leadership.” It was established in 2003 and comprises at least 79 funds totaling over $8 million. The foundation typically gives between $80,000 and $90,000 in grants each year. Funding areas of interest include education, community, health, housing, and women and girls.

Grants for Education, Public Health and Access, Women and Girls, Housing and Homelessness, and Community Development

Aside from donor-designated funds, the foundation has a competitive grant program to award undesignated field-of-interest funds. This is the best opportunity for local groups seeking grants. A grants committee reviews the requests and makes recommendations to the board of trustees. CFBV gives to an array of local causes, centered on education and community. Another funding opportunity is with the Leo L. Livingston Fund, which benefits nonprofits in Taylor, Texas. Livingston’s wife established a fund in his memory, and this fund accepts applications throughout the year as well. These grants support established programs, start-up programs, and capital needs to improve organizational capacity.

Foundation grants typically range from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars each. The foundation does not have an online grants database. Grantmaking is limited to the Brazos Valley of Texas.
