IP TAKE: This is a small foundation, but a good one to know in San Antonio. It is also one of the few locally focused funders to support sports organizations, especially for youth.
PROFILE: Established in 1998, the David and Betty Sacks Foundation is based in Texas and formed after David Sack’s death. He was a physician by profession, but also considered a Renaissance man. This is because he was an accomplished athlete, musician, and sculptor as well. Grantmaking interests are performing arts, fine arts, education, sports competitions, and the prevention of cruelty towards animals and children.

The Sacks Foundation is managed by US Trust/Bank of America and does not have its own full-time staff. Grantees in San Antonio include the San Antonio Sports Foundation and the Mitchell Lake Audubon Center. The Children’s Bereavement Center, San Antonio Children’s Museum, and Kinetic Kids received Sacks grants in San Antonio. Grants have gone to the Spay-Neuter Assistance Program in Houston and the Physicians Benevolent Fund in Austin. Amateur sports groups as defined in section 501(j), not professional sports organizations, are eligible for support from Sacks.

A majority of grants are between $3,000 and $10,000. However, other recent grants have been in the $1,000 to $2,000 range lately. The foundation focuses on Texas, but it awards grants to various parts of the state. Within Texas, the bulk of Sacks' support goes to groups in the San Antonio and Houston areas.
The foundation accepts unsolicited grant requests from nonprofits. Unsolicited grant applications are due on February 1 each year. Grantees must wait one year before seeking new funding.
