Permian Basin Area Foundation

OVERVIEW: The Permian Basin Area Foundation supports human services, education and youth programs, health, housing and community development, and culture and the arts in West Texas counties.

IP TAKE: There are many permanent funds at PBAF, but the competitive grant program comprises a big part of the foundation’s grants. Local grantseekers have a good chance at funding here.

PROFILE: Established in 1989, the Permian Basin Area Foundation (PBAF) is a community foundation in West Texas. The foundation is based in Midland, Texas and began with a charitable investment of $400,000. PBAF “partners with generous donors to leave a lasting impact in communities throughout a multi-county region of West Texas.” Grantmaking areas of interest are many and include human services, education and youth programs, health, housing and community development, and culture and the arts.

Grants for Animal Welfare and Wildlife, Arts and Culture, K-12 Education, Public Health and Access, Housing and Homelessness, and Community Development

The foundation funds broadly and in several different grantmaking areas; in some ways, it focuses more on region than issue. It lists animal services, arts and culture, community development, education, environmental causes, health and mental health, housing and shelter, human and social services, and youth development as funding priorities.

PBAF has semi-annual competitive application and review process facilitated by the foundation’s grants committee and staff. This funder looks for long-term returns within acceptable risk tolerances and regularly monitors and evaluates performance. It also gives priority to applicants that identify long-term potential impacts of their projects, promote volunteer participation, and uses resourceful fundraising practices like matching grants and other donor contributions.

The foundation typically reviews grant applications in the spring and fall of each year, with spring cycle pre-application submissions due April 1 and fall cycles by October 1.

Important Grant Details

The foundation does not have an online grants database, but it does have a newsletter that grant seekers can sign up for. Its grantmaking extends across a multi-country region in West Texas.

PBAF accepts unsolicited grant inquiries from nonprofits. First-time applicants are required to contact the foundation at least 30 days before the application deadline to schedule a preliminary interview. The grants committee and staff review new applications.
