PROFILE: Established in 1976, the Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation (VBLF) is a health conversion foundation based in Harlingen, Texas. Its original mission was to raise money for the Valley Baptist Health System. In 2011, the Valley Baptist Health System entered into a joint venture with Vanguard Health Systems, and the foundation changed its mission to support the broader healthcare-related needs of the community. The foundation “invests in and serves as a catalyst for ideas, partnerships, medical education, research and programs that improve the health and quality of life in the Rio Grande Valley.” VBLF funds local efforts to improve health in the lower Rio Grande Valley for obesity and diabetes prevention, healthy lifestyles, access to care, mental health, aging in place, dental health, medical education and scholarships.

Grants for Public Health and Access

The Valley Baptist Legacy Foundation approaches health giving by viewing health as a complete state of mental, physical, spiritual and social well-being. Its health program areas include efforts to improve health in the lower Rio Grande Valley for obesity and diabetes prevention, healthy lifestyles, access to care, mental health, aging in place, dental health, medical education and scholarships.

It provides funding for operating expenses, multi-year requests, new projects, indirect costs up to 10 percent and staff positions.
