PROFILE: Established in 1996, the W.D. Kelley Foundation is committed to the Georgetown philanthropic community in Texas. It was formerly known as the W.D. Kelley Charitable Trust. The foundation seeks to “acknowledge and encourage innovative leadership in the areas of education, health and human services in the Georgetown philanthropic community.”
Grants for Education and Community Development
As part of its commitment to these three main grantmaking areas, the foundation gives a large portion of funding to projects for youth and family. It also sometimes gives preference to faith-based programs. Kelley looks for good leadership in grantee organizations, as well as innovation in education. This means that nontraditional, experimental, and outside-the-box education projects that challenge local students are welcome here. It only makes grants to nonprofits and public entities, but not to endowments or capital projects. The foundation has given general operating grants to Keep Temple Beautiful, Community Montessori School, GirlStart, Grace Bible Church and Guide Dogs of Texas.
Grantmaking is largely focused on Georgetown, Texas. However, the funder has given recent grants to groups based in Georgetown, Austin, San Antonio, and Temple, Texas.

Foundation grants tend to range from $5,000 to $25,000. This funder does accept unsolicited grant applications from local nonprofits. To apply for a Kelley grant, grant seekers need to download and complete a basic information sheet and write a letter of intent up to two pages long. Grant seekers also need to include the project budget, IRS status, Form 990, and certified audit or financial statement. All grant applications must be sent to the foundation by mail, as email requests are not encouraged. Applications should be sent to the attention of “Grants Committee.” There are no deadlines published on the funder’s website.
