V Foundation for Cancer Research

OVERVIEW: The V Foundation for Cancer Research supports cancer research across the United States.

IP TAKE: The V Foundation for Cancer Research, partnered with ESPN and several other major organizations, prioritizes funding “physicians and scientists who have pioneered techniques to make breakthroughs in cancer research.” While transparent, this funder is not accessible as it does not accept unsolicited applications.

It will be challenging to get on this funder’s radar beyond its regular techniques of finding potential grantees. In order to get a grant here, your research will need to occur through the “72 NCI-Designated cancer centers, a select group of other (affiliated) state-of-the-art cancer research facilities in the US, and a few top-ranked Canadian centers” where the V Foundation sends information about new grant opportunities requesting innovative research applications. This means that your research must occur through a cancer center affiliated with the V Foundation to qualify for funding. However, don’t hesitate to contact the foundation to learn more about how it chooses who to fund so you can learn more about how to get on their radar.

PROFILE: Established in 1995, the V Foundation for Cancer Research was founded by famed basketball coach and ESPN broadcaster Jim Valvano, who died in 1993, less than a year after receiving his cancer diagnosis. The foundation has since awarded over $353 million to support cancer research around the U.S. The foundation seeks to "make a difference by generating broad-based support for cancer research and by creating an urgent awareness among all Americans of the importance of the war against cancer." The V Foundation performs these dual roles through advocacy, education, fundraising and philanthropy.

Grants for Diseases and Cancer Research

The V Foundation’s grantmaking offers several funding options for establishing researchers. The foundation offers five types of funding:

  • V Scholar Grant is a 3-year grant of $200,000 per year. It supports “young tenure-track faculty early in their cancer research careers by funding projects that are either laboratory-based fundamental research or translational research.”

  • The Translational Grant supports “bench to bedside research, whose endpoint is often planning or initiation of a clinical trial” through a 4-year grant of $200,000 per year.

  • The All-Star Grant is a “re-investment in previous V Scholar or Translational grant recipients who are invited to apply for a $1,000,000 grant payable over 5 years. Any type of cancer research is permitted.” This funding opportunity prioritizes “innovative” research, supporting “the next generation of cancer researchers.”

  • The Designated Grant supports “basic or translational research at research institutions and may support outstanding research outside our standing list of NCI-Designated cancer centers.”

    • The size and duration of these grants varies widely depending on the initiative.

    • To trigger a new stand-alone grant opportunity, $3,000,000 must be raised.

  • The Mission Grant supports educational “projects within the V Foundation’s focus to advance research processes such as increasing clinical trial awareness, outreach, and enrollment.” This grant offers $100,000 or less per year.

The V Foundation for Cancer Research also has several Special Funds that grant seekers may apply to as well. Funds evolve with relative frequency, so check back often for new developments.
