PROFILE: Established in 1984, the Bedford Community Health Foundation (BCHF) is a health legacy foundation based in Bedford, Virginia. BCHF formed when Bedford County Memorial Hospital was sold to the Roanoke Hospital Association, known known as Carilion Clinic. The foundation “works to identify and address community health needs, awards scholarships for nursing programs and allied health education, makes grants to non-profit organizations providing direct health services, encourages community involvement through donations and service and serves as a community health information resource.” It funds local efforts for a variety of health-related programs.

The Bedford Community Health Foundation supports many different aspects of health, including adult day care, charity care, fitness and physical therapy, free clinics, health education and health screenings. Other interests are hospice care, hospital and nursing home equipment, national health organizations’ initiatives in Bedford, non-emergency medical transportation, nursing education and nutrition. Additionally, past grants have gone towards prescription medical assistance, physician and specialist requirements, parish nursing, EMS emergency care, substance abuse, domestic abuse and mental health. In addition to grants, BCHF also awards scholarships to local students pursing their educations in healthcare fields.
