OVERVIEW: David Henle and his wife Joan move their philanthropy through the Joan C. & David Henle Foundation, which gave away around $866,000 in a recent year. The couple strongly support Union College in Schenectady, New York. Giving focuses on New York—the city, its suburbs, and upstate.

BACKGROUND: David L. Henle graduated with a B.S. in industrial economics from United College in 1975, and received his MBA in finance from NYU in 1981. Henle began his career in the commercial lending division of Irving Trust before joining Goldman Sachs in 1980. He joined DLH Capital in 2005, where he's a managing member.

EDUCATION & YOUTH: Strong support goes to Henle's alma mater, Union College, where he has sat on the board of trustees since 2004. Part of the family's work at Union involves the David L. Henle Merit Scholarship, created with a $2 million gift. The Henles also support The Bronxville School Foundation (the couple's sons attended The Bronxville School); Concordia College in Bronxville; St. Aloysius School; and PAVE Schools.

HEALTH: Grantees include Blythedale Children's Hospital, JDRF, and Northwell Health Foundation.

ENVIRONMENT: Grantees include Kiawah Conservancy, and Nature Conservancy Adirondack Chapter, where Henle sits on the board of trustees.

SPORTS: The Henles fund the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Team Foundation, where Henle is on the board, and the U.S. Wrestling Foundation.

LOOKING FORWARD: Expect the couple to maintain these interests.
