Daniel and Brooke Neidich

SOURCE OF WEALTH: Goldman Sachs; Dune Real Estate Partners

FUNDING AREAS: Arts & Culture, Health, Education, Human Services

OVERVIEW:  Dan and Brooke Garber Neidich conduct their philanthropy through the Daniel M. Neidich & Brooke Garber Foundation, which available tax filings show, gave away around $1.2 in 2018. Brooke, who is prominent in the art world, plays a large role in the couple's philanthropy. The couple supports quite a few arts outfits each year, particularly in New York. Brooke also co-founded the NYU Langone Child Study Center and Child Mind Institute, both of which address children's mental health. Board involvements and personal connections appear key for this funder.

BACKGROUND: Daniel M. Neidich got his B.A. from Yale University in 1972, and an MBA from Stanford in 1974. Neidich joined Goldman Sachs in 1978, and worked in the real estate banking department. In 1984, he made partner and later became co-head of the merchant banking division. In 2004, Neidich founded Dune Real Estate Partners, a New York-based real estate investment firm.

ISSUES:

ARTS & CULTURE: Neidich's wife Brooke Garber Neidich plays a big role in the couple's arts and culture giving. Brooke inherited her father's jewelry business, Sidney Garber Fine Jewelry, in 2008. Brooke is on the board of the Whitney Museum of American Art, and Lincoln Center Theater. The couple has supported a long trail of arts grantees, including the Whitney Museum, The Studio Museum and the New Museum, also extending modest support for the Jewish Museum and the Bronx Museum, among others. They are also co-founders of Lincoln Center Theatre, Roundabout Theatre Company, and Public Theater.

The Neidichs support music programs such as include Jazz at Lincoln Center. Other arts grantees include Tribeca Film Institute, Creative Time, the Drawing Center, Storefront for Art & Architecture, PEN American Center, and Lighthouse International.

Outside New York City, the Neidich foundation's grantmaking has supported Telluride Mountainfilm in Telluride, Colorado, a ski town the couple is particularly fond of, and LAND (Los Angeles Nomadic Division), "a nonprofit organization founded in 2009 committed to curating site-specific public art exhibitions in Los Angeles and beyond," which is run by a former Whitney Museum Curator.

HEALTH: Brooke chairs the board of the Child Mind Institute (CMI), an outfit she founded with psychiatrist Harold S. Koplewicz after Koplewicz diagnosed a learning issue in one of her children. CMI describes itself as "an independent nonprofit dedicated to transforming the lives of children and families struggling with mental health and learning disorders."  The couple has also supported Alzheimers Drug Discovery Foundation, National Hemophilia Foundation, Lown Cardiovascular Research Foundation, and Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Reproductive health is a major interest, and the couple has given grants to National Institute for Reproductive Health, several Planned Parenthood chapters, and Naral Pro-Choice America of late.

EDUCATION: Grantees include East Harlem School, Prep for Prep, Hayground School, Collegiate Charter High School, City College Fund, Brown University, Yale University, Stanford University, the Brick Church School, the Pratt Institute, Columbia Teachers College, Chapin School, Hotchkiss School, and California Institute of the Arts. Many of these schools have personal connections to the family—for instance, all of the couple's children attended Brown University. Neidich, meanwhile, is on Prep for Prep’s board of trustees.

HUMAN SERVICES: Neidich and Brooke have recently supported outfits such as Citymeals on Wheels, Food Bank of New York, Henry Street Settlement, Coalition for the Homeless, and Lenox Hill Neighborhood House.

OTHER: The couple has supported the Clinton Foundation, as Brooke is good friends with Hillary, as well as Friends of the Highline, Central Park Conservancy, and the 9/11 Memorial.

LOOKING FORWARD: Neidich, who is in his 60s, and Brooke are very active philanthropists. Expect the couple to continue funding their select interest areas, particularly the arts and children's mental health.
