PROFILE: Established in 1999, the Brettler Family Foundation was founded by businessman Daniel E. Brettler and his wife Cindy. Daniel founded Car Toys, and is the chairman and CEO of Wireless Advocates, which operates the wireless kiosks in all Costco Wholesale warehouses in the United States. The foundation does not maintain a website, which limits information available on its grantmaking priorities and activities. According to tax filings, the Brettler Family Foundation focuses on efforts to provide shelter, food and education.

The Brettlers are steady patrons of Plymouth Housing, which “works to eliminate homelessness and address its causes by preserving, developing and operating safe, quality, supportive housing, and by providing adults experiencing homelessness with opportunities to stabilize and improve their lives.” One of the outfit’s sites is named A.L. Humphrey House, after Cindy’s late father. The Brettlers also steadily support United Way of King County, whose board Dan once chaired. Dan serves as co-chair for the Committee to End Homelessness in King County.

Grants range from $100 to $269,348. In a recent fiscal year, the foundation gave away around $1.1 million. Past grantees include Boys & Girls Club of King County, College Success Foundation, Food Lifeline, King County Sexual Assault Resource Center, Mercy Housing, Scholarship Fund for Rainier Scholars, Seattle Children’s Hospital, and Virginia Mason Foundation.

The foundation keeps a low profile and does not accept unsolicited proposals.
