PROFILE: The Ellison Foundation was founded in 2003 by businessman Thomas Ellison and his wife Maureen Sue Ellison. Thomas is the owner of Savers, LLC. He is also the founder of Foundation Bank in Bellevue. The Ellison Foundation seeks to “support nonprofit organizations who create sustainable benefits for the people they serve.” The foundation invests in innovative medical research, educational initiatives that create lifelong achievement, and programs addressing the needs of our community’s most vulnerable families. The Ellison Foundation invests in highly effective, regional nonprofit organizations and institutions involved in medicine, education and human services.
The foundation’s medicine program invests in local institutions that provide innovative advances in medical care and medical research. Ellison’s education program invests in organizations and initiatives that provide students with opportunities that support lifelong achievement and success. It is particularly interested in creating successful pathways to post-secondary degrees or certifications. Through its human services program, the foundation supports agencies that demonstrate responsible and effective programs that meet the needs of the community’s most vulnerable populations with a specific focus on women and children. The foundation also runs its Ellison Education Grants, which were created to empower and support Washington State’s most effective, innovative and inspirational K- 12 public school teachers.
Important Grant Details:
Grants range from $5,000 to $1.2 million. In a recent fiscal year, the foundation gave away approximately $3 million. Past grantees include Art With Heart, Seattle Children’s Hospital, Rainier Scholars, Eastside Baby Corner, Girl Scouts of Western Washington, and United Way King County.
The Ellison Foundation accepts one-page proposals via email attachment for review. Proposals should include the organization’s name and contact information, a brief overview of what the organization does, a requested grant amount and how it would be used. There are no deadlines for submitting proposals. Proposals are reviewed throughout the year.
