PROFILE: The Grays Harbor Community Foundation (GHCF) is based in Hoquiam, Washington, and supports the local community. It seeks to “provide the administrative and investment management services that make it easy for donors to be involved at whatever level they wish, and to accomplish their charitable goals with their tax deductible donations that improve the quality of life in Grays Harbor.” It administers a community building grants program, as well as donor-designated and donor-advised grants. For the community building grants, grant applications are reviewed twice per year.
Grantmaking categories are education, health and wellness, arts/culture/history, and basic needs. Education grants include involving families and communities in student achievement and include mentoring programs, financial literacy and self-worth within the community. Health and wellness grants address health disparities, fund substance abuse and mental health programs, prevent teen pregnancy and tobacco use, and provide services for abuse and assault. Arts, culture, and history grants aim to encourage participation in schools, preserve landmarks, and connect people to the history of Grays Harbor. Basic needs grants address hunger, infrastructure needs of food banks, affordable housing and homelessness services.
Community building grants are usually between $5,000 and $25,000. The deadlines typically fall at the beginning of February and September. Nonprofits can receive these grants once per year, although priority is given to groups that haven’t received grants in recent years. Past recipients include Beyond Survival, the Children’s Advocacy Center of Grays Harbor and the Pediatric Interim Care Center.
There is also a small grants program at GHCF that awards grants of $5,000 or less twice per year. Recommended purposes for these grants include small-scale technology needs, food purchases for feeding programs, small renovation projects, and capacity building efforts.
GHCF provides funding to local school districts and harbors in the county. These applications are usually due the first of June and are $10,000 to $20,000 depending on the annual organizational budget. After-school grant applications are also usually due the first of June, and elementary programs are emphasized.
