PROFILE: Established in 1988, the Jean K Lafromboise Foundation was founded by the late Jean Lafromboise, a native Seattleite, who along with her late husband Clancy were involved over many years in the newspaper business. The foundation’s president is currently Frank Coyle and its vice president is CPA Deyonne Tegman. While the foundation does not maintain a website, its tax returns do outline priority areas. Jean K Lafromboise Foundation’s grantmaking is restricted to rowing activities, graduates from Seattle, Roosevelt and Enumclaw High School, Seattle Washington- based charities, and to scholarships for U.S. Marines.

Jean’s only son Michael Lafromboise, graduated from Roosevelt High School and the University of Washington, where he competed in crew. He served in the marines and was killed in action during Vietnam. Following his death, Jean was an active supporter of University of Washington and Seattle city crew organizations, donating new racing shells to the University of Washington, Greenlake, Everett and U.S. Rowing programs. Jean also spearheaded women's crew at the University of Washington. Through the years, Jean donated nearly 30 scholarships annually to graduates of West Seattle High School and Roosevelt High School.

Grants range from $2,500 to $85,000. In a recent fiscal year, the foundation gave away around $481,000. Past grantees include Virginia Mason Foundation, Seattle Central Community College,  Central Washington University, Childhaven, Seattle Children’s, Seattle Symphony, Northwest Harvest, and Friends of Green Lake Crew, home to the Michael S. Lafromboise Endowment.

The foundation contributes to pre-selected charities. Submissions should be made by letter. The deadline is March 31st.
