The company dates back to the 1890s. The foundation has a limited website, which details some of its grantmaking priorities and activities. The foundation’s major funding areas are private secondary and higher education, social services and the arts.

The foundation primarily focuses on funding major capital campaigns of non-profit, 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt organizations headquartered and operating in the Seattle/King county area. To meet operating fund needs in the community, the foundation contributes to the United Way and ArtsFund. Grants for Education

Other grantees have included Compass Housing Alliance, Salvation Army, United Way of King County, Northwest Harvest, and International Justice Mission.

Grants for the Arts

Grantees have included 5th Avenue Theatre, ArtsFund, Pacific Northwest Ballet, Pacific Science Center, Seattle Children’s Theatre, and Seattle Art Museum.

Grants range from $25 to $280,000. Past grantees include Seattle University, Wave College, Lakeside School, 5th Avenue Theatre, Seattle Children’s Theatre, and Epiphany Parish of Seattle.

Grant requests should not occur more than once every five years and no more than one percent of the private portion of the capital campaign will be funded. The foundation does not fund national or international organizations. Minor capital needs such as computer and telephone equipment will not be supported. The foundation does not fund individual requests, endowments, scholarships, conferences, seminars, pilot, start-up or seed money projects, nor does it underwrite special event programs, concerts, videos, books or personnel positions.
