Kitsap Community Foundation: Grants for Washington

OVERVIEW: This funder supports Kitsap County nonprofits and immediately surrounding areas in the fields of health and human services, arts and culture, education, children and youth development, and environment and animal welfare.

IP TAKE: Grant opportunities usually only come around once per year with this funder. However, it considers nearly all nonprofit needs.

PROFILE: The Kitsap Community Foundation (KCF) is based in Silverdale, Washington, and dates back to 1993. It seeks to “improve our community's quality of life by connecting people who care with causes that matter.” This community funder has over 40 funds and approximately $4.2 million in assets under management. Since 1999, the foundation has awarded over $1.3 million in grants, scholarships, and contributions.

Annual grant cycles typically open up in January. It makes community grants in health and human services, arts and culture, education, children and youth development, and environment and animal welfare. Grants up to $5,000 support groups working in Kitsap County and the surrounding areas.

Grants are also available through the Sound Institute of Family and Children’s Services Endowed Fund to benefit foster children and family reconciliation. These grants assist youth up to age 25 who are involved in the foster care system; grants support both residential and non-residential services. It makes two-year grants up to $6,800 per year. Youth mentoring grants up to $1,200 have also been provided by KCF's Youth Mentoring Endowment Fund.

Like some other community funders in Washington, KCF uses the Common Grant Application. Applications are typically due in late January and grantees are notified about their awards in April or May. A list of grant recipients is here. Recent recipients include the Bainbridge Public Library, Bremerton School District, Benedictine Mission Home, and Kitsap Humane Society.

In addition to grants, the foundation also awards scholarships from many funds held at KCF. Kitsap Great Give is a community event that typically takes place in April.

Trained volunteer grant evaluators offer local perspective on community needs for grant decisions. This small staff includes a president/CEO, funds and grants administrator, and communications and design specialist.

The foundation staff can be reached with general questions at 360-698-3622, kcf@kitsapfoudnation.org, or PO Box 3670, Silverdale, Washington 98383.
