PROFILE: The PACCAR Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the PACCAR company, headquartered in Bellevue, Washington. As a company, PACCAR designs, manufacturers and provides support for light-, medium- and heavy-duty trucks under the Kenworth, Peterbilt and DAF brands. The company also works with advanced diesel engines, provides financial services, information technology, and distributes truck parts. The company’s history of philanthropy dates back well over a century, and the private foundation was established in 1951.

The funder has made grants totalling over $200 million supporting education, social services and the arts. Like many corporate grantmakers, it supports communities where its employees live and work. PACCAR has emerged as a prominent funder in Washington. Aside from the Bellevue headquarters, PACCAR locations are in the Kirkland, Renton and Algona communities in Washington.

The PACCAR Foundation has given approximately 42 percent of grants to education in recent years. Education grants often fund universities, scholarships, science and business research and construction of educational facilities. Higher education is a priority through regular grantmaking and employee matching gifts.

It has made approximately 51 percent of its grants to social services, lately. Healthcare technology is a priority, and it regularly supports community hospitals and dental services. It gives major grants toward building cancer research facilities. PACCAR also supports United Way organizations in terms of donations and volunteer hours. Only about 7 percent of overall giving has funded the arts in recent years. While Washington State is a priority, the foundation also gives globally. For example, PACCAR funded hundreds of eye surgeries in India and assisted poor farmers in China.

The grant application process is online and there is no initial letter of inquiry process. At both universities and hospitals, PACCAR tends to support capital campaigns for facilities improvements. This is much more common than awards for programs, general operations or fundraising events. Grant seekers can expect to be notified of a funding decision within six months, but capital project funding is often contingent upon building permits and start dates.
