Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region

OVERVIEW: The Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region supports arts and culture, basic needs and self-sufficiency, community development, environmental sustainability and nonprofit effectiveness in Wisconsin.

IP TAKE: Only about five percent of the foundation’s grants derive from the foundation’s unrestricted/discretionary fund, but over a dozen donor-directed funds held at CFFVR accept grant requests too.

PROFILE: Established in 1986, the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region is a community foundation based in Appleton, Wisconsin. Walter L. Rugland first helped to create this foundation with donations, and it is now the second-largest certified community foundation in the state of Wisconsin. The foundation aims to “strengthen our community for current and future generations by helping people make a difference in the lives of others.” CFFVR funds local efforts for arts and culture, basic needs and self-sufficiency, community development, environmental sustainability and nonprofit effectiveness.

The CFFVR arts and culture grants fund visual, music, performing and literary arts, as well as other cultural and history experiences. The foundation’s basic needs and self-sufficiency grants aim to reduce the number of people living locally in poverty and address root causes of poverty in the area. Community development grants focus on neighborhood improvement, community partnerships and community education programs. Environmental grants support sustainable practices, educational opportunities for children and youth and community awareness. CFFVR also provides nonprofit effectiveness grants for organizational planning, capacity building and education and training for nonprofit leaders.

Grants range between about $1,000 and $75,000. Grantmaking focuses on Calumet, Outagamie, Shawano and Waupaca counties in Wisconsin and the Neenah-Menasha area of Winnebago county. Past local grantees include the Shawano Area Early Childhood Partnership, Greater Fox Cities Area Habitat for Humanity, and the Fox Cities Environmental Learning Campus/Bubolz Nature Preserve. This foundation accepts unsolicited grant applications from nonprofits for its Bright Idea Fund grants and also for some donor-directed grant funds. Several other affiliated funds held at CFFVR have their own separate grant application processes. Direct general questions to the staff at info@cffoxvalley.org or 920-830-1290.
